Drake doing it wrong covers11/11/2022 ![]() I was like, please.įITZGERALD: And then I was like, OK, we're in for twice that. I prayed that this would be a 45-minute album. It's a lot of work, you know?įITZGERALD: It's not easy to be a fan of Drake, especially when, you know, he does kind of put out these very bloated albums, which he's been doing for the past several years. ![]() I feel like embracing Drake as an artist entails a certain amount of taking the transcendent with the kind of eye-roll-inducing. If you edited out all the self-pity on this 86-minute record, you'd have, like, a pretty good EP. My way of making fun of Drake over the years.Has been to kind of sing all his songs to the tune of (singing) I feel sorry for myself. For me, it's like - being hit with this flood of more than 80 minutes of new Drake music, I found myself, as I was relistening to it, starting to latch onto songs but found the experience of listening to the whole album to feel a little deadening after a while. And then his fans dig deep on his full albums. THOMPSON: He feels a lot like a singles artist, right? Like, he's so known specifically for singles. THOMPSON: So I also find his tendency to over-stuff his albums - this is his third straight album that is more than 80 minutes long. I think, as a rapper, he can feel a little indistinct, especially when he's paired up with, you know, people like Jay-Z who - you know, who are just so instantly identifiable as themselves. I think I like Drake the singer a little bit more than Drake the rapper. And I continue to find him a little exhausting. I've spent much more time living with the singles, as we all have, as anybody who tunes into a radio station can attest. THOMPSON: I have not been a Drake completist over the years. I have a little bit - I mean, certainly a less thoroughgoing relationship with Drake's music. I wanted to get more into identifying the production, the samples. But this album, I'm like, OK, I want to dig more into it. Let me put that to the side for, you know, a couple of days and see what happens when I come back to it. And that's a good thing because usually, when an album drops, I listen to it. And at this point, I could see myself listening to it quite a few more times in the next couple of days. So the album, I think, represents that.įITZGERALD: (Laughter) I mean, you know, we've spent a few hours with it so far. But Drake's life is extravagant and opulent and all over the place in a lot of ways. ![]() He's trying to familiarize himself with us and be like, hey, you know, I'm still here. But his experiences are very different than what we were accustomed to when he first came out. So it's interesting because he still feels the need to share his experiences with us, like, very transparently. And now his life has changed a lot since those days. ![]() He's always been very open about who he is, what he desires, what he wants. And this album really represents him and the fact that - like, his music has, since Day 1, been very revelatory. So I've been listening to him for over a decade now. I immediately was like, oh, what's this? I have to pay attention. And then he started rapping in the late 2000s. But he didn't really stand out much from everyone else. I became familiar with him when he was on "Degrassi," which was the kind of teen soap opera show. I've (laughter) just about said as much as I can about Drake since the moment I realized who he was. So I have a very long relationship with Drake's music. Give me some of your, I'm guessing, many, many thoughts on Drake in general and "Certified Lover Boy" in particular.įITZGERALD: Sure. Kiana, you and I have spent a bunch of hours with this record already. Given that Drake has been streamed tens of billions of times on Spotify alone, it's no surprise that "Certified Lover Boy" is already a huge hit. THOMPSON: It's his first since 2018's "Scorpion." This album contains 21 songs in 86 minutes, with features from the likes of Jay-Z, Travis Scott, Future, Lil Wayne and many, many more. He's a rapper, an actor, a brand, an entrepreneur, a four-time Grammy winner, a meme factory, a hit factory and a maker of very long albums, like "Certified Lover Boy." ![]() If we are to sum up Drake, he is a singer. Joining me is music writer Kiana Fitzgerald. And today, we are talking about Drake's new album "Certified Lover Boy" on POP CULTURE HAPPY HOUR from NPR. On Friday, Drake dropped his long-awaited sixth album, "Certified Lover Boy." It's generated conversation around everything from its many guest stars to its cover art, which features a diverse array of emoji pregnancies. ![]()
